Video clip of American Tribal Style® group improvisation June 01, 2017 12:00

American Tribal Style® dance: a set vocabulary of movements and system of non-verbal cues that allows a group of dancers to improvise a performance... it can easily be mistaken for a choreography!
American:  because the dance form was developed in the late 1980's at the FatChanceBellyDance® studio in San Francisco, California.
Tribal Style:  because it combines elements of Egyptian bellydance and Flamenco with traditional dance movements from tribal people living in Northern Africa, India and Central Asia.

Every year American Tribal Style® dancers from around the world gather together for three days of intensive workshops called the ATS® Homecoming. During the participants showcase, dancers from thirteen FatChanceBellyDance® Sister Studios, including Elysium Tribal, perform here as the 'Lone Wolves' troupe. The music and costuming choices were selected ahead of time, but many of the dancers had never met before the event. With no time to rehearse prior to the show, we confidently walked onto the stage and let the magic of group improvisation take over!

This edited musical clip contains a portion of "Nefertari's Dream" by Phil Thornton and Hossam Ramzy. (available on iTunes)

How's that saying go...adapt or perish? February 25, 2016 00:29

Tonight's Intermediate/Advanced class was all about adapting. I have a dedicated student who is living out of town during the week because of a temporary work situation. We've been trying various forms of web cam programs so she can 'attend' class. Skype was a dismal failure due to really poor connection quality. This time we tried Google Hangouts chat. There we lots of camera angle adjustments, audio delays that would come and go, music or my instructions that may or may not be heard. Can you hear me now? What if I face this way instead? Can you see my feet if I stand here? You've danced out of the frame!

Towards the end of class we played a three song set of music to 'perform' to. When we finished I realized my virtual student only had a partial view of our bodies. Luckily she could still figure out the moves to follow along. A testament to her adaptability! It reminded me of my early days as an ATS dancer, when proper formations didn't always happen. Somebody would be out of position but we'd be on a small stage with nowhere to move for a better view of the leader. You'd have to rely on half the information!

I was also reminded of something Kristine Adams said in the three day intensives I attended last month at the FatChanceBellyDance studios. Everyone wishes for the perfect performance conditions, in a theatre with a wood stage, the amazing sound system, fantastic lighting and the undivided attention of your audience. But she said we'll never learn to be a professional dancer there. We learn to be a professional on the tiny stage where only three people fit but four of us are dancing. Adapt! We'll learn on the uneven asphalt where the sun gets in your eyes and your boombox cuts out mid-song. Adapt! That is how we learn to keep smiling and continue dancing unfazed by it all.

So we closed our class tonight being really thankful that we have a virtual student in a hotel room with erratic WiFi, because we're learning to adapt and we'll ALL be better dancers for it!

Dancing in the Flow® Class Playlist - February 22, 2016 February 23, 2016 10:21

ATS® Dancing in the Flow® classes are based on the class format of 'All dance – No talk!'. I dance as the participants mirror my movements and we all get lost in the music! Prelude / Qadukka-I-Mayyas by Jesse Cook

Class Playlist for February 17, 2016 February 19, 2016 16:15

Dancers love music! We love discovering new tunes and getting lost in old favorites. We really can't get enough of it! But sometimes a class playlist appears to be pretty small...like this week:

Kassar Army by Pete List
Maya's Theme by Mychael Danna
Sahib Balkan by Buscemi

Short and sweet playlists happen for a variety of reasons. We may sit still with eyes closed and listen intently to a new piece of music to discover how it moves, how it feels or what journey it takes us on. Then we'll play it several times over as we drill specific moves to it or use it for various classroom exercises. Also, the occasional class may be rather talk heavy, as we delve into the more cerebral aspects of being dancers. Whatever the reasons, remember that even a small playlists can be grand in purpose! Enjoy this week's morsel of music!

Dancing in the Flow® - New Class for Summer 2015 May 25, 2015 13:44

Dancing in the Flow class at Elysium Tribal Bellydance Studio
American Tribal Style® belly dancers of all levels are welcome to attend this specialty class, which is based on the format of 'All dance - no talk!' Once the class begins, there will be no verbal communication. There will be none of the usual group formations or leader changes, no dance partners or technique drills. Participants simply follow the instructors movements and enjoy! The driving force behind the Flow® concept is responding to the music without thinking.

Dancing in Flow® is a one hour class divided into 4 fifteen minute segments with a quiet water break every fifteen minutes. During the first fifteen minutes of class, the brain will chatter as the students become used to dancing continuously. During the second fifteen minutes, the brain will begin to relax. During the third period of dance, the brain will finally decide to take a vacation to allow the body to enjoy moving. Finally, during the last fifteen minutes, you will go on auto-pilot into pure bliss. Participants are encouraged to remain silent as they leave in order to maintain their meditative state.

Dancing in the Flow® classes are scheduled on the following Monday nights:
June 8 & 22, July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24
7:30 to 8:00 pm - is for socializing and browsing the costuming boutique
8:00 to 9:00 pm - silent dancing (due to the nature of the class, latecomers will not be admitted)
$15 per class, cash at the door
Space is limited! Each week you must RSVP your attendance via email by 5:00 pm on the Sunday prior to class.
